Catching Trout in the cold.

Winter stillwater trout fishing involves fishing slowly and sometimes not so slowly with larger, more visible, or high-movement lures, such as boobies and snakes, as well as Fritz Lures, nymphs, and buzzers. Adjusting the fishing depth with sinking lines, long leaders, or weighted flies is crucial for finding lethargic fish that hold in specific areas. Techniques include slow retrieves with pauses or static fishing with a bung or indicator. Fluorocarbon leaders and careful casting are essential for minimising tangles.

Key Principles

  • Slow your Retrieve:
  • Trout metabolism slows in cold water, so fish become lethargic and are more easily caught with gentle, slow retrieves or by fishing static areas.
  • Fish Deeper:
  • Trout will often hold in deeper, more stable water during winter, so target the correct depth by adjusting leader length, using sinking lines, or employing weighted flies.
  • Find Fish-Holding Features:
  • Look for boat pontoons, buoys, or changes in depth that attract trout seeking shelter or a more leisurely meal.
  • Provoke Aggression:
  • Use big, vibrant, high-movement lures like blobs, snakes, and boobies to attract the attention of winter trout and stimulate a predatory response.

Effective Lures & Flies

  • Boobies and Blobs:
  • High-buoyancy patterns like Boobies and Blobs are excellent for targeting deep-holding rainbow trout, mainly when fished with a sinking line and a stripped retrieve.
  • Nymphs & Buzzers:
  • Traditional patterns, such as buzzers or Nymphs, fished under a bung or indicator, can be very effective for finding fish looking for an easy meal. But more modern Bung Flies have changed the ball game entirely, including Mop Flies, Egg Flies, and Dog’s Bollock Buzzers & Blobs
  • Lures and Snakes:
  • Lures like Dennis the Menace, Deadly Old Boy, Ally McCoist & Humungus work well with aggressive pulling retrieves to create a large profile and pulsate through the water.
  • Variety:
  • Be prepared to switch between large, vibrant lures and smaller imitations, as trout preferences can change throughout the day.

Techniques & Equipment

Deadly Old Boy
  • Sinking Lines:
  • These are essential for getting your flies down to the fish in deeper water.
  • Fluorocarbon Leaders:
  • Stiffer fluorocarbon leaders, preferably with a longer breaking strain, reduce tangles when fishing multiple flies or in windy conditions.
  • Static or Slow Retrieves:
  • For lethargic fish, a static approach using an indicator or a bung, or a very slow, pulsing retrieve, often works best. But Don’t be afraid to mix it up as if fish can still chase a fast fly even when the water is realy cold.
  • Multiple Flies:
  • A long leader with three flies, spaced well apart, can increase your chances, but requires open casting loops and proper timing to prevent tangles.
  • Be Patient:
  • Winter fish are less active, so patience and repeated efforts, using different flies and tactics, are crucial for success.
