My name is David Whyte (Davie), and I’m based in Aberdeen, “The Granite City”. I have been a fly fisherman for over 40 years, fishing on wild Rivers for Salmon and Trout, as well as in stocked fisheries; if there is a fish there that would take my fly i am there!
Over the years i got more and more disappointed with the flies i was buying, i was sick of paying far too much for poor quality flies.

🎣 The Story Behind Granite City Fishing
My father taught me how to tie flies when I was a kid. Due to work commitments & family, I never really got round to tied my own flies. I got lazy and started buying them instead.
The problem was, the quality of the flies I was buying just wasn’t good enough. I had hooks breaking, materials falling off, and the price of a fly seemed to be getting more and more out of control.
So, I decided to start tying my own again.
I’d worked my entire life in the oil industry, but my contracts were becoming increasingly shorter, and I was constantly having to find new jobs.
I started a small sideline selling bought-in flies, but again, I wasn’t happy with the quality.
Then my father said to me:
“If you ever get the chance, why don’t you tie up some flies, see if they sell, and take it from there? Your flies are so much better than what you’re buying in.”
So that’s exactly what I did.
I tied up a selection of flies and put them on my Facebook page.
They sold within seconds.
A few days later, completely out of the blue, I was made redundant from my job in the oil industry.
I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands, so I started tying more flies.
And, you guessed it…
They sold straight away too.
That’s when I decided to take the plunge and start Granite City Fishing.
What started as a few flies tied at home has grown into a small UK fly-fishing business built around something that has always mattered to me:

Today, I use quality UK-sourced materials and high-quality hooks wherever possible, working with other small UK businesses just as I do with my own.
