What Is Fly Tying Chenille and How Is It Used?

Chenille is a versatile fly-tying material used to create fuller bodies, add texture and introduce colour to a wide range of fishing flies. It’s popular with fly tyers making trout lures, blobs, streamers and nymph patterns for UK stillwaters, reservoirs and lochs.

Available in different thicknesses, colours and finishes, chenille is a useful material for beginners and experienced fly tyers alike.

What Is Chenille Used For?

1. Trout Lures and Streamers

Standard and thicker chenilles are ideal for building up the bodies of larger flies. They can be wrapped around the hook shank to create patterns such as Woolly Buggers and other streamer-style lures.

2. Nymphs and Larvae

Fine chenille and specialist materials such as Vernille can be used to create slim or segmented bodies on nymphs and worm-style patterns. The right material depends on the size and appearance you’re looking to achieve.

3. Blobs and Stillwater Attractor Flies

Brightly coloured chenille and fritz-style materials are popular for tying attractor patterns for stocked rainbow trout and other stillwater species. UV and fluorescent finishes can provide additional visual effects, depending on the material.

Choosing the Right Chenille

When choosing chenille for your next fly pattern, consider:

Thickness: Fine chenille suits smaller flies, while thicker materials help build fuller bodies.

Colour: Match your pattern to the conditions you’re fishing or experiment with brighter attractor colours.

Finish: Standard, sparkly and UV-effect materials offer different appearances.

Fly pattern: Choose a material that suits the size, shape and style of the fly you’re tying.

Add Chenille to Your Fly-Tying Bench

Whether you’re tying blobs, lures, nymphs or other trout patterns, chenille is a practical material to keep in your fly-tying collection. Experiment with different colours and textures to create patterns suited to your own fishing.
