🎣 Woolly Bugger – A Stillwater Favourite
The Woolly Bugger is one of the most versatile and effective flies you can have in your stillwater fly box. Its combination of movement, profile and natural-looking materials allows it to imitate a wide range of trout prey, including leeches, minnows, damsel nymphs and even crayfish.
How to Fish a Woolly Bugger
Slow & Steady Retrieve
Try a floating or intermediate line with a slow, steady retrieve. A smooth figure-of-eight retrieve, combined with the occasional sharp twitch, can give the fly plenty of movement and imitate a swimming leech or distressed baitfish.
The Countdown Method
After casting, allow the fly to sink while keeping your line under control. Start with a count of around 5–10 secondsbefore retrieving. If you’re not getting takes, vary the countdown until you find the depth where the trout are feeding.
Fish Around Structure
Don’t be afraid to work your Woolly Bugger around weed beds, drop-offs and submerged features. Allowing the fly to sink close to structure before beginning your retrieve can be particularly effective when trout are holding tight to cover.
