Description

Blob flies are bright, highly visible trout flies mainly associated with stillwater fishing in the UK. They’re particularly effective when trout are feeding aggressively, but they can also work when fish are sitting deeper.
🎣 What is a Blob?
A Blob is usually a small, brightly coloured, fluffy fly tied from materials such as Fritz or similar synthetic chenille. Common colours include:
• 🟠 Orange
• 🟡 Yellow
• 🟢 Lime/Chartreuse
• 🔴 Red
• 🩷 Pink
• ⚪ White
They don’t imitate one particular insect. Instead, they act as a highly attractive trigger, often resembling a small food item or simply provoking a trout into taking.
🎯 How to fish a Blob
There are several effective methods.
1. The washing-line method
One of the most popular approaches.
Set up with a Blob on the point and one or two smaller flies on droppers, such as Buzzers or Diawl Bachs.
Cast out, allow the flies to settle, then retrieve the line very slowly.
The Blob acts as an attractor while the other flies imitate more natural food.
2. Fast retrieve
When trout are chasing fry or feeding aggressively, try a faster retrieve. Short, sharp pulls can make a Blob extremely effective.
3. Sink it and fish it deep
Don’t assume Blobs are only surface or shallow flies. On a sinking line, allow the Blob to reach the depth where the trout are holding and retrieve it slowly.
💡 A great starting setup
For a typical stillwater:
Point: Orange Blob
Middle dropper: Buzzer
Top dropper: Diawl Bach
Try a slow figure-of-eight retrieve first. If nothing happens, gradually increase the speed until you find what the trout want.
One important tip: don’t be afraid to change the Blob colour. If orange isn’t working, try pink, yellow or chartreuse. Sometimes a simple colour change can make all the difference
